Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Vahram Bey came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father's occupation was "barutcubasi". In all Vahram knew five languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) and Italian in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 18, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Vahram in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Zabit Kitabeti Muavini, where the entries run to 1885/86, with a rise to Bidayet Mahkemesi 2. Daire Azasi in 1881/82. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1886 to 1889.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 2,000 in 1881/82, as Bidayet Mahkemesi 2. Daire Azasi in Istanbul, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 14 years of salary come to 242,400 kuruş, 2.8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1889/90. The honours of Vahram were a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi and Osmani orders. The workbook records written works, beginning "Usul-i Muhakemat-i Cezaiye Kanun-i Muvakkatini Ermeni lisanina tercume ...".
