Life#
Yusuf Ziya Bey was born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yusuf Ziya also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Yusuf Ziya began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Drama in 1870/71, at about 18, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Yusuf Ziya in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Drama. Next came Burdur in 1872/73, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1873 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Yusuf Ziya to Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1890 to 1896, then Trabzon from 1896 to 1901. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1901 to 1903.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 5,400 in 1901/02, as Rusumat Nezareti in Izmir, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 34 years the salaries add up to 1,077,600 kuruş, 5.1 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more.
