Life#
Kayser Ferid Efendi was born in Lubnan in 1851/52 (AH 1268), into the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community. In all Kayser Ferid knew four languages, Arabic, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Kayser Ferid began work in Deyrulkamer in 1867/68, at about 16, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1870/71, with Kayser Ferid as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Deir al-Qamar (Deyrülkamer). Kayser Ferid then moved to Zahlé (Zahle) from 1872 to 1876, then back to Deir al-Qamar from 1876 to 1878. The annual lists then follow Kayser Ferid to Tripoli (Trablusşam), Acre (Akka) and Nazareth (Nasıra) from 1878 to 1884, then Safed from 1884 to 1892. Next came Beirut (Beyrut) from 1892 to 1897. The last posts were in Haifa in 1897/98, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür) and Jounieh (Cunye) in 1898/99. Nine places in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 630 in 1897/98, as 3. Müdür in Haifa, when three in four paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
