Life#
Born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1874/75 (AH 1291), Vedi Efendi came from the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Vedi had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
At about 17, in 1891/92, Vedi began work in Beirut, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, places Vedi in Beirut, the birthplace, as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Misir from 1900 to 1903.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 900 in 1901/02, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Misir, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
