Life#
Antuan Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Antuan also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Antuan began work in Beirut in 1889/90, at about 21, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Antuan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Beirut, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Adana from 1901 to 1904 and Mersin in 1904/05.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Adana, when one in three paid officials earned less.
