Life#
Born in Kastamonu in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Ohannes Nadir Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Ohannes Nadir had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
At about 19, in 1887/88, Ohannes Nadir began work in Izmir (İzmir), with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for seven years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1893/94, to 1896/97, every annual entry places Ohannes Nadir in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Izmir.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1893/94, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Izmir, when one in ten paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 9,600 kuruş, 40 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
