Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), Tahor Efendi came from the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community. Tahor had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Sidon in 1892/93, at about 24, with ten unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. So long an unpaid start was rare; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for ten years or longer. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Tahor in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Sidon, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhabere Memuru in Sidon, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, four years of salary come to 14,400 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
