Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, this official was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Tophane in 1888/89, at about 20, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 80 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with the official as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Tophane, where the entries run to 1905/06. In 1906/07 the lists place the official in Istanbul, the birthplace, with a rise to a post in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi).
The salary went from 80 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 300 in 1906/07, the peak, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 7,440 kuruş, 26 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
