Life

İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Arapgir in 1868/69 (AH 1285) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a storehouse official (ambar memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Ethem also wrote French as well as Turkish.

İbrahim Ethem began work in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 29, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1902/03, with İbrahim Ethem as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Hama. The last posts were in Izmir in 1903/04 and Istanbul in 1904/05.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 500 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Hama, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
