Life#
Osman İsmet Efendi was born in Arapgir in 1867/68 (AH 1284) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1879/80, at about 13, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 6 per cent started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Osman İsmet in Izmir (İzmir) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Osman İsmet to Elassona (Alasonya) from 1885 to 1888. From 1888 to 1900 every annual entry places Osman İsmet in Gördes, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 600 in 1888/89, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Gördes, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
