Life#
Mehmet Efendi was born in Rumeli in 1863/64 (AH 1280), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bitola (Manastır) in 1880/81, at about 17, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Mehmet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Elassona (Alasonya). Mehmet then moved to Kırklareli, Edirne, Shëngjin (Şengin) and Shkodër (İşkodra), four places in seven years, with a rise to Muhabere Memuru in 1892/93. The last post was in Mitrovica (Mitroviça) in 1894/95, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 600 in 1894/95, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Mitrovica, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
