Life#
Karnik Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Karnik knew five languages, English, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) and Italian in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Istanbul in 1884/85, at about 21, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Karnik in Beyoğlu as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Karnik to Vlorë (Avlonya), Taşucu and Adana from 1886 to 1891, then Gaza (Gazze) from 1891 to 1901. The last posts were in Beirut (Beyrut) from 1901 to 1903.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 600 in 1886/87, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Vlorë, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
