Life#
Born in Tripoli (Trablusşam) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), this official came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); the official also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
The official began work in Tripoli in 1891/92, at about 20, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1891/92, with the official as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Gaza (Gazze). Next came Jerusalem (Kudüs) from 1893 to 1896, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1895/96. The last posts were in Damascus (Şam) from 1896 to 1901.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 300 in 1895/96, the peak, as Posta Memuru in Jerusalem, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 34,080 kuruş, 56 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
