Life#
Born in Tripoli (Trablusşam) in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mehmet Enis Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Hamidiye Komutani". Mehmet Enis was taught by a private teacher.
Work began in Istanbul in 1896/97, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. From 1901/02 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Mehmet Enis in Beirut (Beyrut), first as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), from 1904/05 as an official (Memur).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 350 in 1904/05, the peak, as Memur in Beirut, when one in three paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 13,800 kuruş, 59 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
