Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1878/79 (AH 1296), Alber Aziz Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Alber Aziz also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Alber Aziz began work in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul in 1901/02, at about 22, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1901/02, with Alber Aziz as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1903/04. Alber Aziz then moved to Beirut (Beyrut) and Thasos (Taşoz) from 1904 to 1907, with a rise to a post in the Karantina Kitabeti in 1904/05. The last entry, for 1907/08, names Alber Aziz as Tahaffuzhane Memuru, with no place.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to a peak of 1,500 in 1907/08, as Tahaffuzhane Memuru, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
