Life#
Born in Bar in 1878/79 (AH 1296) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Yakup Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Yakup had 12 years of schooling, at Darüşşafaka, the school for orphans in Istanbul, attended the telegraph school as well, wrote French as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1899/1900, Yakup began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1899/1900 to 1905/06 places Yakup in Istanbul, first as an official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), from 1904/05 as Ittihat Posta Basmemuru.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1899/1900 to 550 in 1905/06, the peak, as Ittihat Posta Basmemuru in Istanbul, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
