Life#
Born in Edirne in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Serkiz Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Serkiz had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), and wrote French, Italian and Turkish.
At about 19, in 1889/90, Serkiz began work in Durrës (Dıraç), with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The annual lists begin in 1898/99, with Serkiz as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Thessaloniki (Selanik). The last posts were in Mount Athos (Aynaroz) from 1899 to 1905, with a rise to official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru).
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to 600 in 1904/05, the peak, as İttihat Posta Memuru in Mount Athos, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
