Life#
Born in Edirne in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Manul(?) Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Manul(?) also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Manul(?) began work in Edirne in 1888/89, at about 16, paid from the start, on 175 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1888/89, with Manul(?) as an official (Memur) in Demirtas, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa), Soufli (Sofulu) and Xanthi (İskeçe) from 1892 to 1895, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1894/95. The last post was in Demirtas again in 1895/96, with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 175 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to a peak of 400 in 1895/96, as Posta Memuru in Demirtas, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over eight years the salaries add up to 24,000 kuruş, 50 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
