Life#
Born in Bilecik in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Abik Şakik Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Abik Şakik also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Abik Şakik began work in Bilecik in 1885/86, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with Abik Şakik as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Edirne, where the entries run to 1891/92. Abik Şakik then moved to Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1892 to 1896. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1896 to 1899.
Pay rose from 800 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to a peak of 900 in 1893/94, as Seyyar Memur in Svilengrad, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 12 years the salary stood below the first, 400 kuruş against 800. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
