Life#
Ohannes Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a member of a court (mahkeme azası). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Ohannes also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1893/94, Ohannes began work in Bilecik, with nine unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for nine years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Ohannes in Yalova as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The last posts were in Büyükada in 1904/05 and Beyoğlu in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to a peak of 500 in 1905/06, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when half the paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
