Life#
Elyas Zehlan Efendi was born in Haifa (Hayfa) in 1877/78 (AH 1294), into the Latin Catholic (Latin) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Elyas Zehlan knew four languages, Arabic, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 19, in 1896/97, Elyas Zehlan began work in Acre (Akka), with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1901/02, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Elyas Zehlan in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Beirut (Beyrut).
