Life#
İstrati Mamli Efendi was born in Bursa in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); İstrati Mamli also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
İstrati Mamli began work in Istanbul in 1895/96, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1896/97, to 1901/02, every annual entry places İstrati Mamli in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 75 kuruş a month in 1896/97 to 350 in 1900/01, the peak, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when one in four paid officials earned less.
