Life#
Hasan Şevket Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Şevket also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Skopje (Üsküp) in 1890/91, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Hasan Şevket as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Pristina (Priştine). Next came Skopje from 1895 to 1902, then a return to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1906. The last post was in Derna (Derne) in 1906/07, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to a peak of 1,500 in 1906/07, as 1. Müdür in Derna, when 92 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
