Life#
Ahmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Kemaliye (Eğin) in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Hamdi began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1894/95, places Ahmet Hamdi in Divriği as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1898/99. The last posts were in Balıkesir in 1900/01 and Adana in 1901/02.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Muhabere Memuru in Divriği, when 30 per cent of paid officials earned less.
