Life#
Born in Kibris in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Hanna Yanko Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Hanna Yanko also wrote Arabic, French and Greek (Rum).
Work began in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1894/95, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1894/95 and 1895/96, place Hanna Yanko in Beirut as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Beirut, when 17 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1895/96. Hanna Yanko probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Kıbrıslı devlet memurları (1879-1909)" by EMİNE ÇELİKKUT (2019) (the name and the birthplace agree).
