Life#
Yorgi Efendi was born in Bursa in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took seven years, at a French school (Fransız Mektebi); Yorgi also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish.
Yorgi began work in Bursa in 1891/92, at about 18, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1895/96, places Yorgi in Istanbul as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). The annual lists then follow Yorgi to Heybeliada, Büyükada and Haydarpaşa from 1896 to 1899. The last posts were in Bursa, the birthplace, from 1899 to 1904.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1895/96 to a peak of 515 in 1903/04, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Bursa, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Bursalı memurlar" by DERVİŞ ŞAFAK TOPRAK (2019) probably refers to Yorgi, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number and a place of service agree.
