Life#
Yanko Efendi was born in Bursa in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi); Yanko also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Work began in Bursa in 1892/93, at about 17, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1898/99, to 1902/03, every annual entry places Yanko in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in İskenderun.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1898/99, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in İskenderun, when one in five paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 18,000 kuruş, 60 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1902/03. Yanko probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Bursalı memurlar" by DERVİŞ ŞAFAK TOPRAK (2019) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and second number agree).
