Life#
Ahmet Nuri Efendi was born in Bursa in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). At about 20, in 1890/91, Ahmet Nuri began work in Bursa, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Ahmet Nuri in Bursa, the birthplace, as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1892/93. Ahmet Nuri then moved to Eskişehir in 1893/94, as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru). From 1894 to 1905 every annual entry places Ahmet Nuri in Kütahya, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1904/05 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 400 in 1903/04, as Posta Memuru in Kütahya, when 36 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Bursalı memurlar" by DERVİŞ ŞAFAK TOPRAK (2019) probably refers to Ahmet Nuri, since the name, the birthplace, the archive register and second number and a place of service agree.
