Life#
İsmail Nuri Efendi was born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1870/71 (AH 1287) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1888/89, İsmail Nuri began work in Kırkağaç, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1890/91, with İsmail Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Vize. İsmail Nuri then moved to Isparta from 1891 to 1898, then Uluborlu from 1898 to 1903, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Soma in 1903/04.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 600 in 1903/04, as 3. Müdür in Soma, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
