Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Ali Rıza Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 27, in 1897/98, Ali Rıza began work in Izmir, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From 1898/99 to 1904/05 every annual entry places Ali Rıza in Aydın, first as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1903/04 as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1898/99 to a peak of 500 in 1902/03, as Seyyar Memur in Aydın, when half the paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 450 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
