Life#
Born in Izmir (İzmir) in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Rüştü Efendi was the child of an army captain (yüzbaşı). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Rüştü also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 20, in 1889/90, Mehmet Rüştü began work in Izmir, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1891/92, places Mehmet Rüştü in Muğla as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Denizli from 1892 to 1897. The last posts were in Sarayköy from 1897 to 1899.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 480 in 1897/98, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Sarayköy, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
