Life#
İbrahim Süreyya Efendi was born in Denizli in 1862/63 (AH 1279) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1877/78, İbrahim Süreyya began work in Denizli, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places İbrahim Süreyya in Sarayköy as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İbrahim Süreyya to Aydın and Edremit from 1881 to 1885, then back to Denizli, the birthplace, from 1886 to 1901, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1897/98. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) and Aydın from 1901 to 1904 and Manisa from 1904 to 1906.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 660 in 1904/05, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Manisa, when three in four paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 140,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
