Life#
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1877/78 (AH 1294) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hamdi Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hamdi also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 21, in 1898/99, Hamdi began work in Kirkuk, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Hamdi in Baghdad (Bağdat) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1905/06. The last posts were in Kirkuk, the birthplace, from 1906 to 1909.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03 to 380 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kirkuk, when 38 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Hamdi probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Kerküklü devlet adamları" by ORHAN ABDULBASIT ANWER ANWER (2021) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
