Salih Zeki Efendi

Muslim (Müslüman). Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1885/86 (AH 1303). On record 1902 to 1910, 7 annual entries.

Life

Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1885/86 (AH 1303) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Salih Zeki Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Salih Zeki had nine years of schooling, at the School of Industry (Sanayi Mektebi), wrote Arabic as well as Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Of the 5,146 officials with a school, 8 studied at the School of Industry (Sanayi Mektebi).

Work began in Baghdad in 1902/03, at about 16, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1902/03, places Salih Zeki in Baghdad, the birthplace, as a fair-copy clerk (Mübeyyiz), where the entries run to 1904/05. Next came Gaza (Gazze) from 1905 to 1907. From 1907 to 1910 the annual entries place Salih Zeki in Jaffa (Yafa), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1909/10.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Mübeyyiz in Baghdad, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over seven years the salaries add up to 19,200 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1909/10.
