Life

Born in Ilgın in 1884/85 (AH 1302), Ahmet Raif Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph director (telgraf müdürü). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Raif also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

Work began in Diyarbakır in 1901/02, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1902/03 and 1903/04, place Ahmet Raif in Diyarbakır as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Diyarbakır, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1903/04.
