Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1880/81 (AH 1298), Mustafa Nazmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Nazmi also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Mustafa Nazmi knew four languages, Arabic, French, Persian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1899/1900, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1902/03, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Mustafa Nazmi in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Diyarbakır, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Diyarbakır, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06. An entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerinde Diyarbekirli yöneticiler" by İSHAK ŞİMŞEK (2013) probably refers to Mustafa Nazmi, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
