Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Cemil Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Cemil also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
İsmail Cemil began work in Çemişgezek in 1902/03, at about 20, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place İsmail Cemil in Diyarbakır, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
