Life

Ahmet Kemal Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1881/82 (AH 1299), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "albay". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Ahmet Kemal also wrote French as well as Turkish and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).

At about 22, in 1904/05, Ahmet Kemal began work in Edirnekapı, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Ahmet Kemal in Fatih as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 100 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Fatih, when 2 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
