Life

Born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1882/83 (AH 1300), Ahmet Tevfik Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Ahmet Tevfik also wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.

At about 20, in 1903/04, Ahmet Tevfik began work in Hindiye, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1906/07 and 1907/08, place Ahmet Tevfik in Karbala (Kerbela) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 200 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhabere Memuru in Karbala, when one in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
