Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1882/83 (AH 1300) into the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community, Habib Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Habib had four years of schooling, at the Mektep, and wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
At about 20, in 1903/04, Habib began work in Basra, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1906/07, with Habib as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Basra. The last post was in Asare in 1908/09.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1906/07, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Basra, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09.
