Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1885/86 (AH 1303), Said Efendi came from the Syriac Christian (Süryani) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Said had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Said knew four languages, Arabic, French and Turkish in writing and Persian in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 16, in 1902/03, Said began work in Nazareth (Nasıra), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 800 kuruş. From 1904/05 to 1907/08 every annual entry places Said in Al-Faw (Fav), first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1905/06 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 800 kuruş a month in 1904/05 to a peak of 1,000 in 1905/06, as Muhabere Memuru in Al-Faw, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 45,600 kuruş, 2.3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
