Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1885/86 (AH 1303), Mehmet Rauf Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Rauf had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1904/05, Mehmet Rauf began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 75 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Mehmet Rauf in the same post, communications official (Muhabere Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
