Life#
İbrahim Ethem Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İbrahim Ethem also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 16, in 1892/93, İbrahim Ethem began work in Çengelköy, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 56 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with İbrahim Ethem as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1900/01. Next came Karaburun in 1901/02, then a return to Istanbul from 1902 to 1908. The last post was in Kuruçeşme in 1908/09.
The salary went from 56 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 400 in 1901/02, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Karaburun, when one in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over 15 years the salaries add up to 43,152 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned.
