Life#
Hasan Rıza Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1876/77 (AH 1293) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hasan Rıza began work in Istanbul in 1892/93, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1894/95 to 1897/98 places Hasan Rıza in the same office, council clerkship (Meclis Kitabeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 50 kuruş a month in 1894/95, in the Meclis Kitabeti in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over four years the salaries add up to 2,400 kuruş, 10 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1897/98.
