Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1884/85 (AH 1302) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ömer Hulusi Efendi was the child of a chief clerk (başkatip). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1904/05, at about 19, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 25 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1904/05, to 1907/08, every annual entry places Ömer Hulusi in the same office, accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 25 kuruş a month in 1904/05, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when fewer than 1 per cent of paid officials earned less.
