Life#
Mehmet İlhami Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Bekci". Schooling took 12 years, at the Imperial School (Mekteb-i Sultani); Mehmet İlhami also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1903/04, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1904/05 to 1907/08 places Mehmet İlhami in the same post, official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
