Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1883/84 (AH 1301), Ahmet Fevzi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took nine years, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi); Ahmet Fevzi also wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Ahmet Fevzi began work in Istanbul in 1900/01, at about 16, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1901/02 to 1906/07 places Ahmet Fevzi in the same post, Sube Memuru, in Sirkeci.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1901/02 to 200 in 1906/07, the peak, as Sube Memuru in Sirkeci, when one in ten paid officials earned less.
