Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268), Eksiri Erşidi Efendi came from the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. Schooling took four years, at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi). Eksiri Erşidi knew four languages, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 24, in 1876/77, Eksiri Erşidi began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Eksiri Erşidi as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Fener. For 1877 to 1880 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Eksiri Erşidi to Izmir (İzmir) from 1880 to 1888, with a rise to official of the union post (İttihat Posta Memuru), then Edirne from 1888 to 1891, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1888/89. Eksiri Erşidi then moved to Galata from 1891 to 1901, then Istanbul in 1901/02. The last posts were in Sirkeci from 1902 to 1905.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 750 in 1888/89, as Seyyar Memur in Edirne, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
