Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1863/64 (AH 1280), Ahmet Faiz Efend came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a finance official (maliye memuru). At about 17, in 1880/81, Ahmet Faiz began work in the Rusumat Kalemi in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 70 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Ahmet Faiz in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Ahmet Faiz then moved to Galata from 1884 to 1901, then Samsun, Izmir (İzmir) and Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1901 to 1908, with a rise to Rusumat Muduru in 1901/02 and to Rusumat Basmuduru in 1907/08. The last posts were in Jeddah (Cidde) from 1908 to 1910.
Pay rose from 70 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 5,400 in 1907/08, as Rusumat Basmuduru in Baghdad, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 5,000 kuruş. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 503,640 kuruş, 3.2 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. Pay rose to 77.1 times the first salary; only 15 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The last annual entry is for 1909/10. Ahmet Faiz received a rank (rütbe) and the Mecidi and Osmani orders.
