Life#
ALİ RIZA EFENDİ was born in Ürgüp in 1863/64 (AH 1280) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
ALİ RIZA began work in Burgas (Burgaz) in 1893/94, at about 30, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 30 or older. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with ALİ RIZA as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Burgas. Next came Rhodes (Rodos) from 1894 to 1900.
